Umutuzo lodge is located in Rwanda, the heart of Africa,
in the Western Province along the Lake Kivu in Rutsiro district,
equidistant between Rubavu district(Gisenyi) and Karongi district(Kibuye).
It’s easy to find us, but hard to leave.

HOW TO GET HERE
Once you are in Rwanda, there are several ways to reach Umutuzo lodge.

By Road (Rental Car, Tourist Vehicle or Taxi)
Umutuzo Lodge is accessible by road from anywhere in Rwanda. Your main reference point is Nkomero village, located along the main road linking Rubavu (Gisenyi) and Karongi (Kibuye).
There are two main ways to reach Nkomero:
From Rubavu (Gisenyi):
Follow the road toward Karongi. Nkomero is located along this route.
From Kigali via Muhanga, or from Karongi (Kibuye):
Drive toward Rubengera roundabout, then head north on the Rubavu–Karongi road until you reach Nkomero.
Once in Nkomero, leave the main road toward Boneza sector and follow the clearly marked Umutuzo Lodge road signs for the final stretch.

Follow the road toward Karongi. Nkomero is located along this route.
From Kigali via Muhanga, or from Karongi (Kibuye):
Drive toward Rubengera roundabout, then head north on the Rubavu–Karongi road until you reach Nkomero.
Once in Nkomero, leave the main road toward Boneza sector and follow the clearly marked Umutuzo Lodge road signs for the final stretch.

By Rental Car
Umutuzo Lodge is accessible by road from anywhere in Rwanda.
A 4×4 vehicle is recommended for the final stretch, especially during the rainy season. Guests who choose to self-drive can follow the Umutuzo Lodge road signs after leaving the main road for the final 10 kilometers to the property.
We can also arrange private transport or pick-up from any location in Rwanda, including Kigali and the airport.

Discover options
By Bus
From Kigali via Musanze or from Rubavu (Gisenyi), take a bus to Pfunda Tea Company bus stop.
From there, transfer to a second bus heading to Nkomero.
Alternatively, from Kigali via Muhanga or from Karongi (Kibuye), take a bus to Rubengera roundabout, then transfer to another bus to Nkomero.
Once in Nkomero, you can take a moto-taxi to the lodge, or we can arrange a pick-up with prior booking using the form below.

By Boat
Umutuzo Lodge can be reached by boat from two main directions: from the north via Rubavu (Gisenyi) or from the south via Karongi (Kibuye).
In both cases, ask to be taken to Boneza sector.
The lodge is located on the Kariba Peninsula, directly facing Bugarura Island on Lake Kivu.
We can arrange private boat transport upon request.
